Overview: Students will practice creating tutorials in groups by making tutorials on how to create screen shot and video tutorials. They will finish by posting their tutorial to their blog.

- Arrange your desktop to take a screen shot of an image of your choosing
- Take a partial screen shot using shift+command+4
- Open your blog and start a new post
- In new post, include 3 steps of creating a screen shot (arrange desktop, shift+command+4), rename screenshot on desktop) along with the screen shot picture you took. Also include your screen shot image
- Title post as Screen Shot Tutorial Tutorial
- Go to spotlight, type in Camtasia, and open Camtasia
- Choose "Full Screen"
- Hit Record button and record voice explaining how to take video capture using camtasia as your demonstrating on the computer
- When done, go to Share>Export, save as videoCapture to your desktop
- Open your blog and start a new post.

The Typeface Challenge
Overview: The point of this assignment is to harness digital technology to persuade an audience. Students will study choose and study a particular typeface. Students will research the history, anatomy, and uses of the typeface. Through their research students will create a 5-7 slide Multimedia presentation promoting a particular typeface. Best presentation will have their typeface used as the official typeface of Digital Media for the rest of the semester. Due 3/15.

- History (what was going on in the world when it was created)
- Uses (what do people use this typeface for)
- Identity (if this typeface were a person, who would they be? -or- compare it to different typeface
- Hard Sale (why this typeface should be adapted as the official typeface for Digital Media)
- Prepare a speech written on notecards and rehearse your speech

Audio Narrative Project
Overview
Here are the steps:
The point of this assignment is to harness digital technology to communicate stories of creation. Students will form pairs, consisting of one story editor and one sound engineer. Together the pairs will use vocal recording and instrumentation to create an 3-5 minute audio narrative (See definitions). Pairs will begin by completing brainstorms together. Each person in the group will start by filling out this Project Brainstorm.

Break Beats Assignment
Overview:
Example:
The point of this assignment is to learn Garageband real instrumentation and track editing. The beat will be a re-creation of an original famous break beat: funky drummer or amen break. Also include a sample of your choosing.
- Listen to the Funky Drummer and Amen Break at this blog and pick which break beat you want to re-create.
- Find the tablature: funky drummer or amen break,
- Open Garageband Project and save as name_beats to flashdrive
- Create one software instrument track for each instrument that will be included in the beat
- Follow tablature to create the break beat
- After re-creating the beat find a sample you add sample from one of your Radio Demo songs
- When done, go to Share>Export Song to Disk and save as an MP3

Radio Demo Project

Radio Demo from Giles Peterson
The point of this assignment is to learn basic Garageband techniques and voice recording by creating a Radio Demo. A Radio Demo is a recording that radio DJs use to showcase their DJ skills. Students will create a three song Demo with prelude, two interludes, and a postlude:
- Open iTunes and go to Zeb's music library and note 3 songs you like on Radio Demo Plan Sheet.
- Fill out Radio Demo Plan to record song info and write your commentary
- Show Radio Demo Plan to Zeb and he'll download the songs to your Flash Drive
- Create a new Garageband project and save as: name_radiodemo
- Import three songs to Garaband file from flash drive
- Create a real instrument track and record four clips of your voice: prelude, two interludes, and a postlude based on the commentary you wrote on your Radio Demo Plan
- When done, go to Share>Export Song to Disk and save as an MP3

Transformer Exhibition Project (10th grade)

The point of this assignment is to harness digital technology to demonstrate the nature of transformation in Literature, Science, or History. Students will create a three-scene, 30-second, 360 frame, Flash animation piece detailing the stages of transformation from Antigone, Species Evolution, or a Political Revolution. Here are the steps:
- Read and complete the brainstorm and animatic sheet
- Create a new Flash document and save as name_transformer.
- Create the characters. Make sure each part of the character that moves has it's own layer
- Create the backgrounds for each scene
- Begin to use keyframes and tweens to create a 360 frame, 30 second Tranformer Movie
- When done with a draft submit to Zeb for critique
- After critique, revise your movie (due November 19)
- When done, export from Flash as Animated GIF movie and upload to blog as image when done
- Write reflection and submit to Zeb through email (due December 3)

Blog Masthead Assignment
Overview
Using Flash students will create a 700x200 pixel masthead, with 72 resolution. The masthead must include one graphic image as well as the student's name. When the student has finished creating the masthead they will export the masthead as a jpeg and load it to the header area of their blog. Save as name_masthead.
To create and upload your masthead on your blog, follow these instructions:
- Open Safari and go type mail.es-metro.org in the URL bar
- Enter user and password (Name_lastName, 123456). You might have try a couple of times
- In “account settings” changed password to a 8-digit password that you will remember
- Open new tab and go to blogger.com
- Click the big orange button that says, “Create A Blog”
- Fill in all fields in “Create a Google Account” page. Use metro email and password. Accept terms of account and continue.
- Verify account by entering your cel phone #. Google will text you with the code to continue. You may look at your phone.
- Fill in Blog Name with something creative referring to your work in digital media. The url will be your full name.
- Go to “design” or “template design” to style your blog
- Add your masthead by going to “design” and going to “edit” in the header

In our modern world, having strong typing skills is a sure way to move forward and be successful academically, professionally, and even socially. Because of the design of our hands the most efficient way for a human to type is by using all ten fingers. Because ten-finger typing is so important in Digital Media class and the outside world, it will be required that all students type at a minimum of 25 words per minute.
